Who Framed Roger Rabbit 2?

This is the umpteenth time I’ve heard a rumor that there would be a sequel, but today io9.com actually perpetuated the rumor some more with some info that Bob Hoskins may not reprise his role in such a film.  It’s been such a long time since the original, I need to watch it again to refresh my memory.  But does it need a sequel?  I recall it being groundbreaking at the time for the real life – animation combination, but given today’s standards, the whole impact of it being groundbreaking is kinda lost, isn’t it?  So does that mean they will need to rely on the story now?!
